If you want to be taken seriously, you must dress appropriately.  Meaning you should not wear jeans, hats, hoodies, scarves, sneakers, or have visible electronic devices.  Your clothes should fit your properly— pants should cover your behind & your underwear ARE NOT visible to others.  Your hair should be neatly styled.

Avoid speaking in slang!  “Yes sir, Yes Miss, Yes ma’am, etc…”  Bring the name & phone number of at least three (3) professional references.  They should not be related to you.   Ask your teachers, a coach, a club advisor your guidance counselor for permission to use them as a reference.  Bring your own pens (not pencil) with you.

You should conduct yourself in a friendly manner.  Smile and greet others with “Good Morning” or “Good Afternoon.”

Go to bed early the night before so that you wake up early, rested, and refreshed.  You will do better when rested.

Sample interview questions are available on this page.  Select the “interview” tab and read through the questions.

The job market is tight.  You are competing with adults for employment.  For you to successfully compete with adults, you must step up your game and show potential employers that you have what it take.  Oh, one last thing.  If you have a résumé, bring extra copies.

Mark your calendar and good luck!

Minimum Wage Increase

Hello!!

It occurred to me that some of you may not know about the change in the state’s minimum wage. Stay with me…

Effective January 1, 2014, the minimum wage increased from $7.25 per to $8.25 per hour!!  Sweet right?!?

Check your pay stubs to make sure that your employer has made the change. If after checking your pay stub, you discover that you are still being paid $7.25 per hour, you will need to notify your employer… NICELY!! Don’t go stomping into your supervisor or manager’s office demanding a wage increase (a raise).

Times are hard and your employers may be unhappy about the increase. Some employers may feel that they cannot afford the increase; however, the increase is the law and they must adhere to it.

Politely ask your supervisor or manager for a few minutes to discuss “something” with them. During your meeting, explain to your supervisor that you checked your  and you’re still being paid $7.25 per hour. Tell them that effective January 1, 2014, the state’s minimum raised increased to $8.25 per hour. Feel free to tell them that Mrs. Cain said so. They can contact me at 609-343-7300, ext. 2425 or tcain@acboe.org
