Job Fair!!!

Pssst!!   Are you looking for a job?  If so, plan to attend:

The Retail Hospitality, & Tourism NJ Network Hiring Event on:          Wednesday, October 8th,
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing

If you plan to attend after school, make sure that you bring the following with you:
  1. Extra copies of your résumé. (I have resume paper)
  2. The names of three (3) professional references.  You should have the correct spelling of their name, job title and a phone number where they can be reached.  You MUST ask for their permission before using them.
  3. Notebook, pocket file folders (for your extra resume copies)
  4. Extra pens with BLUE or BLACK ink
  5. The name, phone number and address of ALL of your past employers, including seasonal (summer) jobs.

You can also be prepared and look more mature and professional by doing the following:

  1. Dress professionally.  No jeans, sneakers, hats, sagging pants, short skirts, see through shirts, low-cut shirts, etc…
  2. Hide your electronic devices (ear buds, earphones, etc…)
  3. Turn your phone off or on quiet mode and put it away.
  4. Don’t chew gum or eat.
  5. DO NOT go with classmates, friends, or your boyfriend or girlfriend.  If you must go with someone, go with an adult or older sibling.
  6. Know when you CAN and CANNOT work.
  7. Do NOT LIE on your application!!  Falsification (lying) on your application is grounds for termination (firing).
  8. Remember your manners!!!  Good-afternoon, thank you, please and you are welcome.
  9. Use good grammar, “Do ya’ll got anymore applications,”  IS NOT the appropriate way to request an application.
  10. When writing your address, they need your COMPLETE address.  Your complete address includes, your street name, house or apartment number, city, state, and zip code.  Make sure you spell the name of  your street properly and look up your zip code in advance… if you don’t know it.
  11. Smile, be friendly, courteous and give good eye contact.
  12. Ask for the manager’s business card because you will not remember all the names of the employers.
  13. Add the date to your cell phone and set up a reminder.
  14. Review my sample interview questions here.

If you are under 18, Child Labor Laws require you to obtain a work permit (working papers).  I ONLY issue you the permit after you receive an offer of employment (hired).  When you are hired, email me at tcain@acboe.org or obtain a hall pass from a teacher and I will issue you the permit.

Good Luck!  🙂

Minimum Wage Increase

Hello!!

It occurred to me that some of you may not know about the change in the state’s minimum wage. Stay with me…

Effective January 1, 2014, the minimum wage increased from $7.25 per to $8.25 per hour!!  Sweet right?!?

Check your pay stubs to make sure that your employer has made the change. If after checking your pay stub, you discover that you are still being paid $7.25 per hour, you will need to notify your employer… NICELY!! Don’t go stomping into your supervisor or manager’s office demanding a wage increase (a raise).

Times are hard and your employers may be unhappy about the increase. Some employers may feel that they cannot afford the increase; however, the increase is the law and they must adhere to it.

Politely ask your supervisor or manager for a few minutes to discuss “something” with them. During your meeting, explain to your supervisor that you checked your  and you’re still being paid $7.25 per hour. Tell them that effective January 1, 2014, the state’s minimum raised increased to $8.25 per hour. Feel free to tell them that Mrs. Cain said so. They can contact me at 609-343-7300, ext. 2425 or tcain@acboe.org

They can also read the link at the New Jersey Department of Labor’s web page… here

Job Update!

Did you know that the Gap Factory Store, Banana Republic Factory Store, and Old Navy are all owned by the same company?

All three stores are hiring; however the minimum age requirement is not the same.

  • You must be at least 16 years old to work at Old Navy
  • You must be 18 or older to work at Gap Factory Store and Banana Republic.

The great news is that all three companies ARE hiring.  Below are the open positions.  To apply, click here.  Wait!!!  Before you apply, I want to give you a few tips.

  1. Give yourself at least 40 minutes to an hour to complete the application. The application takes time.
  2. You must be available to work nights and weekends.  If you play a fall sport, don’t apply- they cannot work with your schedules.
  3. If you have a résumé that has been proofed for errors, upload your resume to the online application.
  4. Make sure that you have professional references who are not related to you.   The best references for a high school student is a teacher, coach, mentor, advisor, administrator, or counselor. Ask for permission first.   Also ask your reference for a phone number.
